PROTECT ALL COUNCIL HOUSING ESTATES. STOP VISON HOMES TAKE-OVER .

The Issue

I am actively petitioning against the proposed takeover of the Vassal estate in Camberwell by "Vision Homes”, currently owned and managed by Lambeth Council. The estate faces an unprecedented transition as Vision Homes, a for-profit company, seek ownership.

Disturbingly, their plans have gained government approval, impacting numerous houses, roads, and residents—a first-ever attempt of a for-profit company taking over council homes in the UK.

Residents are rightfully concerned about potential new bills, including a 'Sink Fund,' introduced by Vision Homes. The lack of clarity on charges, caps, and fund usage heightens these worries. Moreover, the prospect of increased service charges and VAT on services like repairs adds to the residents' apprehension.

Further uncertainties loom over local homes, as Vision Homes retains the right to sell estate properties to entities like private developers without the obligation to ballot residents for approval. Residents won’t have the ability to elect representatives to the prospective “new board” overseeing the estate, as the board members will be selected solely by Vision Homes.

They are a for-profit organisation! Lacking any history in managing social housing, poised to assume control of social housing services. Should this transfer proceed, it would mark the first occurrence of its kind in the entire UK.

Discussions with residents, the prevailing sentiment is one of extreme worry. Amidst rising living costs, the prospect of additional bills and uncertainty about our homes and livelihoods is deeply unsettling. Residents overwhelmingly unite in the desire to halt this transfer before it progresses any further. I believe that, as a community, we can come together to prevent this not only for our sake, but also as a safeguard for other housing estates facing similar challenges.
