Dear friends, As you know, Justice's abuser received a 2-year jail sentence. Many people said this was not enough, but the truth is, it is the longest sentence that I am aware of that has ever been handed down in Canada for animal cruelty. In 2014, Canada received a grade of "D" on the animal protection index, largely as a result of our "antiquated animal cruelty legislation." Our animal cruelty legislation was created in 1892 and has remained largely unchanged since then. Member of Parliament Nathaniel Erskine-Smith hopes to change that. On February 26, 2016, he introduced Bill C-246, the "Modernizing Animal Protections Act." This bill will need support from other MPs if it is going to pass.
