If the mine is approved, running a power line through our communities WILL NOT bring jobs here and WILL lower property values of those DIRECTLY and INDIRECTLY affected. Our property values will already be affected by West Fraser shutting down. A power line would impact the properties even further. There are lots of studies that show property values are as much as 30% negatively impacted when in vicinity of high voltage power lines. Vacant lots can be as much as 45% less in value as those without power lines in their view.
The mine can run power from another source. They need to work with BC Hydro to develop that. There are alternatives and even BC Hydro themselves knows this and has had a different route planned as far back as 2013. They do not need to run through our communities!
The planned route so far will require a 40 meter wide path clear cut to allow for the 230,000V transmission line. This line will have an easy access, likely 2 wheel drive road on it. It will cut through range land, grazing leases, timber leases, private properties, and our communities. It will enable easy access for anyone to get from 100 Mile, down to Little Fort through back roads. This will make hunting access even easier for out of towners. Every year we have lots of people coming up from the Lower Mainland and this will make their access far easier and allow them to hunt in places they did not have access to before. Places where we would normally hike into. This will also open up access to lakes, meadows, wetlands, and other sensitive habitat that did not have access before.
