Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Integrity in the School of Social Work
The Issue
As a social work student and the School of Social Work Senator for ASUN at the University of Nevada, Reno, I have personally experienced and witnessed the shortcomings of our department. This year has been particularly challenging for many students who feel that their diverse backgrounds are not being adequately catered to within our curriculum. We believe that changes need to be made to ensure diversity, equity, and integrity are at the forefront of our education.
The department needs to design classes that best fit their diverse students. In 2019 alone, it was reported that over 40% of social work students nationwide come from diverse backgrounds (National Association of Social Workers). Yet many feel that this diversity is not reflected in our course content or teaching methods.
We propose two key changes: firstly, that the School of Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno must restructure the Bachelor of Social Work program to effectively accommodate the needs of non-traditional and diverse students to ensure equitable access, support, and success for all social work students; secondly that the School of Social work must revise its communication standards in compliance with the NASW Code of Ethics to enhance the integrity of the program and to prevent further miscommunication and confusion.
This petition is not just about improving education quality - it's about ensuring every student feels seen, heard and valued within their learning environment. Please sign this petition if you support these necessary changes towards diversity, equity, integrity in the School of Social Work.
