As a father currently navigating the family courts to establish a relationship with my child, I have experienced first-hand the challenges and inequities present in our current child maintenance and family court systems. Despite sharing equal care for my child, I feel penalised, victimised, and punished by these systems, which seem skewed against fathers who strive to be active and supportive parents.

Fathers like myself often face significant obstacles, not just in obtaining fair rulings regarding child custody, but also in matters of child maintenance payments. The current system leaves many fathers financially strained, as the payment structure does not adequately consider the reality of equal shared care. Moreover, fathers are frequently overlooked when it comes to child tax credits, which are predominantly allocated to the mother, despite both parents contributing equally to the child's upbringing.

The need for reform is evident. We must advocate for a more equitable approach where fathers are given a fair chance in family courts and a more balanced responsibility regarding child maintenance payments. It is crucial to consider split child tax credits for parents who share equal care for their children, as it recognises and supports the shared commitment to the child's welfare.

We call upon policymakers and stakeholders to review and amend these outdated systems to reflect modern family dynamics. By ensuring fairness in family courts and equitable distribution of child tax credits, we can foster a more supportive and fair environment for all parents and, most importantly, the children involved.
