Promote Equitable School Funding Uninfluenced by Local Poverty levels

The Issue

As a student myself, I've seen firsthand how the current school funding system wreaks havoc on the educational needs and potentials of learners in poverty-stricken areas. Our system dishearteningly places less value on schools in impoverished communities, creating educational disparities and reinforcing cycles of poverty.

Statistically, according to EdBuild, a nonprofit focused on educational finance, schools in poor districts across the nation spend 15.6% less per student than those in wealthier districts. Such inequity deprives students in low-income areas of critical resources, enhancing their disadvantages (EdBuild, 2019).

The current school funding system in Wisconsin is not serving all students equally. Students in rural and low-income districts are left without the resources they need to succeed, while more affluent areas continue to receive ample funding. This funding disparity means outdated textbooks, overcrowded classrooms, and limited access to essential services like special education or extracurricular activities for many children.

We demand that the state reform its funding system to ensure that every child, regardless of where they live, has access to the tools, teachers, and opportunities they deserve. With a fair and equitable funding structure, we can guarantee that every Wisconsin student is given the education they need to succeed.

This petition goes beyond advocating for my local school, it seeks to spark a national conversation about creating a fairer school funding system. A system that respects the need for equal and quality education, regardless of where a child lives or what financial situation they are born into. Our education is our future and all students deserve an equal and fair start. Sign this petition to stand with us in demanding an equitable school funding system.
