The Issue

As a resident living near the Humber River in the Greater Toronto Area, I consistently witness the damage inflicted on the environment and the local community due to the relentless noise and excessive speeds produced by watercraft with large and/or powerful engines.

As we work to create and restore healthy urban wildlife habitat throughout our ravine system, I implore all residents and visitors to urge the Toronto City Council, the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and all relevant authorities to ban engines in excess of 9.9 horsepower from use on the Humber River.

Large and powerful engines on the river have many negative impacts such as:

  • Noise and water pollution imposed on animals.
  • Excessive noise, heard even inside homes.
  • Injured animals from propellers and jets.
  • Shoreline and riverbank degradation.
  • Stress to paddlers.
  • Introduction of invasive species by well-travelled boats.
  • Hostile environments for the vulnerable and threatened species who live there.

The increase in large and/or speeding watercraft on the Humber River has reached an intolerable level.

Your support will ensure that our urban community and wildlife coexist peacefully. Please sign and share this petition to help protect the Humber River, the biodiversity found there and the benefits to human mental health and well-being which nature provides.
