Prohibit Through Truckers from Using Highway 97A

The Issue

Our beloved mother, Audrey Currie, tragically lost her life on December 3, 2023. She was driving on highway 97A when a logging truck crossed the centre line and collided with her vehicle just 10 minutes from her home. Despite the best efforts of witnesses and ambulance staff at the scene, she passed away shortly after on that very highway.

This heartbreaking incident is not an isolated case. The Canadian Motor Vehicle Traffic Collision Statistics (2019) reported that large trucks were involved in approximately 20% of fatal collisions in Canada. The data also shows many accidents and multiple fatalities a year on highway 97A, which includes many incidents involving truckers. Given these statistics and our personal loss, we believe it's time to take action to prevent further tragedies.

We are calling for a ban on through truckers using highway 97A in Sicamous, BC. This highway is a dangerous road at best, once you add truckers that are rushed for their next pick up/drop off or unpleasant road conditions, you have a recipe for disaster. This measure will not only make this route safer for local residents, the community and tourists but also potentially save lives by reducing the risk of fatal accidents involving large vehicles.

We also support a previous petition created in 2019, following the death of Ruth Blencoe, which was to add a median onto highway 97A. This petition was approved in December 2019, but never put into action.

By signing this petition, you are supporting our cause to make our roads safer and prevent other families from experiencing the heartbreak we have endured due to such accidents. Please sign this petition today.
