Prohibit the Use of Fireworks Across the U.K.

Prohibit the Use of Fireworks Across the U.K.
The Issue
Each year, it is heartbreaking to watch my beloved dog cower in fear due to the loud, shocking noises of fireworks. I am not alone in this struggle; thousands of pet owners across the U.K. face the same struggle with their pets, not to mention wildlife disturbed by the bursts of light and sound. This personal pain is a universal issue that impacts many households and animals.
In addition to the distress caused to animals, fireworks also contribute to air pollution, leading to a marked deterioration of air quality. According to King’s College London, levels of toxic particulate matter can increase by as much as 50% on the day of a fireworks display.
Furthermore, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reported that in 2014-2015, there were 4,506 individuals in England who visited A&E because of an injury caused by a firework. Our need or desire for a few minutes of spectacle should not outweigh the potential for harm to our pets, environment, and ourselves.
For these reasons, we implore the U.K. government to take immediate action in banning fireworks to protect our pets, environment, and health. We cannot stand by and watch the physical and emotional distress caused by fireworks. We urge you, compassionate fellow citizens, to sign this petition and make a stance for a calm and less harmful alternative.
