Prohibit testing for Cannabis Nationwide
The Issue
This issue is highly personal to me. I care deeply about it because I have seen too many lives ruined due to outdated and unfair policies. Like countless others, I've had to watch as people who are otherwise competent and reliable workers are unjustly removed from their jobs, and in many cases blacklisted, simply for consuming cannabis in their personal time.
As it stands, hemp and hemp-based products are legal in all 50 states. However, unlike alcohol, which can also be consumed legally, cannabis users are subjected to drug tests that can detect usage from weeks or even months in the past. This creates an unfair double standard. On one hand, we permit the consumption of alcohol, a substance that can cause immediate impairment, with no mandate for subsequent testing. Yet, we penalize those who consume cannabis, a substance that can remain detectable long after any effects have worn off.
In reality, this form of discrimination does nothing to enhance safety in the workplace. Foremen, shift managers, and police officers are all skilled at detecting intoxication. They are fully capable of dealing with issues on a case by case basis, without relying on invasive and biased drug testing policies.
The impact of these drug testing policies extends far beyond individual firings. When employees are removed from the workforce, our economy suffers. Financial instability induced by job loss can also have devastating effects on families.
The time is now to bring an end to discriminatory employment drug testing for cannabis. We implore companies across America to recognize the egregious injustices being caused and to align their policies with the current legal status of cannabis and the needs of their employees.
