As an Australian expatriate, I find myself appalled and deeply unsettled by Sam Jones' egregious behavior. Her astonishing carelessness, marked by her horrific act of stealing a baby wombat, has shaken me to the core. The subsequent lack of remorse, victim-blaming, and deflection on her part only adds salt to the wound. Through her Instagram account, she continues to publicly dehumanize animals, showing a complete disregard for their welfare. Her actions not only jeopardize Australia's rich biodiversity but also propagate a culture of disrespect and nonchalance towards animals.
Australia has a long-standing tradition of upholding stringent wildlife protection laws. According to the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, Australia is home to 9% of all mammalian species on earth, with wombats listed as a protected species. Sam's actions blatantly disregard this culture of conservation.
Moreover, Instagram has often showcased a dedication towards building a safe and respectful platform. By allowing Sam to maintain her account, Instagram indirectly endorses her reckless behavior and gives her the license to continue spreading her disdainful ideologies.
