Prohibit lab testing and enforce stricter transport regulations of diseased lab animals
The Issue
On October 28, 2025, a harrowing ordeal came to light that has since ignited a spark for urgent change. Lab monkeys, that were said to be, actively infected with dangerous pathogens including, COVID, Herpes, and Hepatitis have been transported through Mississippi, posing a grave risk to the people and environment in our beloved state. This concern stems from an incident where a truck carrying such infected animals was involved in an accident, allowing the infected monkeys to escape, possibly leading to a catastrophic outbreak.
The risk linked with transporting infected lab animals is alarmingly high. Even a single lapse can potentially unleash diseases that threaten public health. Evidently, this is not just a matter of local significance; allowing the spread of these infectious agents could easily spiral into a national or global crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), zoonotic diseases account for 60% of infectious diseases in humans. Preventive measures are conclusively the best line of defense.
Let’s stop animal testing in our state. There is no humane way to test on innocent animals. The development of alternatives like cell cultures and computer models offers viable alternatives to animal testing for many applications.
We should also have more strict regulations to transport lab animals coming from outside our state that have active infectious diseases, we can greatly mitigate the risk of accidental release without transit or better regulations. This law will ensure that protocols for handling and retreating such animals will be implemented at their designated research centers or at facilities equipped to manage these risks. Legislative action is needed to close this gaping hole in our current biosecurity measures.
I am calling upon concerned citizens and state representatives to support this indispensable cause. This isn't just about preventing potential outbreaks; it's about ensuring a safer, healthier future for all people and animals within Mississippi and beyond. We urge regulatory bodies to draft and implement laws that will make lab testing on animals and such dangerous transports illegal or better regulated in our state.
Please lend your voice. Changes can start here, with us. Sign this petition to stop all animal testing, starting with Mississippi, and safeguard our communities from the grave risk posed by transporting diseased lab animals through Mississippi by having stricter transport regulations. Your signature could be key in prompting legislative change for a safer tomorrow.
