Prohibit Gender Affirming Care for Minors in the U.S.
The Issue
Four young females in my own family have fallen victim to the modern gender narrative. One of them was able to change her line of reasoning and turn things back around for herself, but the other three are living as trans-males. This situation is not unique to my family, as it reflects a growing concern among many about the provision of gender-affirming care to minors in the United States.
The medical community is currently allowing minors, who are not yet capable of making fully informed decisions, to undergo gender-affirming treatments, which include hormone therapies and surgeries. These treatments can have irreversible physical and psychological effects. Adolescents are at a developmental stage where they are particularly vulnerable and impressionable, making it crucial that any significant medical intervention is approached with utmost caution.
According to the American College of Pediatricians, studies show that 80-95% of pre-pubertal children with gender dysphoria eventually become comfortable with their natal gender in late adolescence. Medical interventions cannot only complicate this natural resolution process but also expose minors to potential long-term health risks, such as infertility and loss of bone mineral density, as highlighted by the National Institutes of Health.
Rather than promote permanent medical procedures for conditions that may resolve naturally, we should encourage supportive mental health care that affirms the child's identity while respecting the normal trajectory of growth and self-identification.
We call upon lawmakers to implement regulations that prohibit medical practitioners from offering gender-affirming care to individuals under the age of 18 in the United States. This step will protect minors from making potentially harmful decisions and ensure they receive the appropriate care and support needed to navigate this critical period of development.
