207-c still in a holding pattern

Just a quick update - the bills that passed the state Legislature concerning probation disability benefits are still being held by the Senate. This is good news because once the legislation is given to the governor, if she does not sign it in 30 days, it is automatically vetoed. Please continue to share this petition until we can declare victory!!
Also, please continue to email the governor's staffers to encourage the governor to sign 207-c into law once it reaches her desk as well as staffers for key legislators to encourage them to contact the governor:

The email: SUBJECT: Please sign probation disability benefits into law!
TEXT: Now that A2535 and S8837 have been passed by the Assembly and Senate, we implore Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign these bills into law once they reach her desk so that all NYS probation officers may approach their county lawmakers to request full disability benefits when hurt in the line of duty. We thank lawmakers who helped to move this legislation forward, and we would appreciate lawmakers' continued support in encouraging final passage. Probation officers deserve the same types of benefits already granted to other peace officers. Our position on this may be viewed at Change.org/207c_probation. Since December 2024, we have pointed out so many factors that make passing changes to General Municipal Law 207-c the only fair way to fully protect probation officers. To recap, probation officers: - perform similar duties as police officers and very similar duties as parole officers (parole has 207-c-like benefits in its contract with NYS) - work with increasingly violent offenders, including those arrested for/convicted of sex offenses, violent assaults, weapon possession, drug possession, domestic violence, etc. - work with those who are gang-affiliated - encounter anti-police sentiment within the community - have experienced incidents in which they are injured by a probationer - perform home visits during which officers do not know what they will encounter - face exposure to the risks of fentanyl and other dangerous narcotics in our communities - supervise many arrestees who are Released Under Supervision in accordance with bail reform laws
Thank you,
