Prioritize the Restoration of the Historical Red Bridge in Kamloops, BC

The Issue

RCMP in Kamloops, BC are still investigating the fire of The Red Bridge believed to be arson. The loss is effecting everyone and has everyone concerned it will not be restored.

Kamloops rush hour traffic lines are much longer and those using taxis have to pay much more money, and the extra traffic is putting more pressure on the other bridges. Many parts of the city are experiencing more problems with the extra traffic.

Recently I have had to rely on taxis for transportation to take me from Heffley Creek to Kamloops for personal and medical reasons. Each ride in a taxi the conversation goes to the devastating fire of the Red Bridge — the new absence of the Red Bridge causes everyone to think twice before driving through Kamloops now with  increases to travel time, and more expensive.

My conversations with cab drivers and residence in Kamloops Seniors Village, and stores — everyone agrees on the importance of the Heritage Red Bridge for connecting downtown with Mount Paul and Hwy 5N communities. Also to restore and rebuild the Red Bridge similar to Heritage Structures, and the impactions on construction delays.

Heritage structures, like the recent announcement to restore Saint Andrew's Church which too had fallen victim to a fire, serve as crucial links connecting us to our past. The Red Bridge, much like heritage buildings and houses, deserves a similar level of attention. Preserving these sites promotes historical interest and enhances community pride. Additionally, studies show that restoration of heritage structures positively impacts local economies (National Trust for Historic Preservation).

A failure to restore the Red Bridge amounts to eradicating a crucial part of our history and heritage. This petition seeks to prioritize the restoration of the Heritage Red Bridge to honour our past, ease the present, and pave a path for the future.
