This last week has seen another suicide but this time in our police force - the key themes can not be ignored however.

He was a professional man, a family man and a man under investigation

Today it has been  announcement that police officer suicides will be recorded nationally. The article outlines that :

"You cannot prevent tragedy if you don’t record it properly. Inconsistent data has allowed the realities faced by officers to be minimised and ignored.
This must now lead to real change - including transparency, publication of the data and recognition of the pressures officers face, especially those under investigation.
Behind every statistic is a person. A colleague. A family. Their lives mattered, and this progress must now lead to action worthy of that fact."

Whilst the Nursing and Midwifery Council have been recording deaths by suicide prior to closure of investigation case - there is no other narrative around this. If lessons aren't learnt and shared then how can we assure everything is being done to minimise this risk?

The NMC needs to put resource and effort into understanding this issue better
