Since 2016 27 nurses have lost their lives prior to the closure of their Fitness to Practice case by The Nursing and Midwifery Council

In 2019 following pressure to do so the NMC started recording suicides and now we know that at least 21 of those have been death by suicide

6 have been in the last year - the highest recorded number since the data was started to be collected

We fear the numbers are higher

To date no thorough risk assessment is performed to determine trigger factors and risks for registrants undergoing FtP and we regularly hear from nurses and midwives telling us that the NMC are ignoring evidence around mental health
