Dear Friends,
Six months ago today, Kabul fell to the Taliban. It was, and continues to be, a humanitarian emergency.
Over 160,000 people have called on Prime Minister Morrison to offer at least 20,000 new humanitarian places in Australia, for people escaping the Taliban.
So far, Mr Morrison hasn’t listened. But with an election coming, local MPs are thinking about their own future and paying close attention to the views of constituents.
Our government was told what would happen when the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan. They were told that young girls and women, journalists and activists, and ethnic and religious minority groups would all be in danger.
But instead of offering new humanitarian places, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke shuffled existing visas around to give the impression of action, where there is none.
In the six months since Kabul fell to the Taliban, young girls have been stopped from going to school. Women have been prevented from working, or leaving the house alone. Journalists have faced abduction and torture, simply for reporting the news.
The war in Afghanistan was the longest in Australia's history. We made promises to the people of Afghanistan, including protection for persecuted groups and women.
With an election fast approaching, it's time our elected representatives lived up to those promises. Please take action today.
Yours in solidarity,
Arif and Batoor, for the #ActionForAfghanistan campaign
