About 200 fishermen protested the proposed reclamation project along the Bagan Ajam waterfront. The protesters mainly came from Butterworth, Bagan Ajam and Teluk Ayer Tawar in Province Wellesley/ Seberang Perai on mainland Penang. Some of the nelayan had been affected by the earlier reclamation for building the Butterworth Outer Ring Road.
Presently, their catch was already affected by the reclamation of Sri Tanjung Pinang 2 (STP2) in the northeast of Penang island was directly across the channel. The declining catch of ikan kembong (Indian mackerel) was a strong indicator of this phenomenon. A related reason could be the clearing of the last mangroves along Gurney Drive-Tanjong Tokong for the STP2 reclamation.
The fishermen expressed solidarity for their fellow fishermen of Penang Island South in the latter's fight against the Penang South Reclamation (PSR).
