PENANG REJECTS RECLAMATION

• The Penang State Government has announced the reclamation of 3 islands south of Penang island.
• This project is alarming considering its size of 4500 acres.
• Do you know what the negative effects will be if this project is approved?
• It will destroy the area with the richest fishery in Penang.
• The state’s food security will be threatened.
• Seafood prices will increase beyond what the Penang residents can afford.
• Apart from that, as many as 4,817 fishermen will be badly affected by this project.
• Traditional fishermen’s livelihoods and heritage will be lost.
• The fishermen objected but the government ignored their grievances.
• Instead alleging that more than 50 % of the fishermen support the reclamation project.
• If this reclamation is approved, the coastal and marine habitat will be destroyed and depleted.
• Threatened species like the Olive Ridley Turtle, dolphins, seahorses [will be wiped out].
• When Nature cannot defend itself, the responsibility falls on all of us to uphold environmental justice.
• Do not sell the seas for short-term profit
  Prioritize balanced and sustainable development for the state.
• STOP the proposed Penang South Reclamation!
