Dear 30,000 supporters of Auroville’s residents,
This week has started with a BANG. On Monday a mass meeting was held to hear from the community how "we the people'' want to proceed with building Auroville. There was an overwhelming show of hands against the current ecologically-insensitive mode of development by authorities, and tensions and stakes are high. Those who have lost faith in collective decision-making are trying to divide the residents, instigating racism and fear. Though there is no guarantee that sitting and talking will actually resolve the conflict, or that the government will respect our autonomy, the majority of residents feel that a collaborative process is the only way forward that upholds the values of the community
The community has spurred on work on Detailed Development Plans, following the Dreamcatchers method with the community’s own architects, to integrate the Galaxy concept and Master Plan framework while being sensitive to local conditions. But this is a collective creative process, and takes time.
Tuesday was another crucial day because the National Green Tribunal convened again, and extended the temporary stay on forest clearing and development till January 3rd. If we thought we would have a quiet Christmas we were wrong! Today morning, tractors and trucks were brought in to continue the work, in defiance of court orders.
We now call on your support once again to remind the authorities that there are clearly viable alternatives that allow BOTH for mobility AND respect the environment. Please take a few minutes and express your support on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or E-mail - whichever is your platform of choice.
