Dear supporters of Women on Nauru,
Please don't take our silence as having given up on the issue of women on Nauru.
On the contrary, ever since the Federal Government denied us access to Nauru late last year, the last 6 months have been spent putting together and writing a 56-page report on the horrific conditions that asylum seeker women are still facing on Nauru.
The report, 'Protection Denied, Abuse Condoned: Women on Nauru at Risk', paints a horrifying portrait of rapes, bashings and other degrading acts against women sent to the island by successive Australian governments.
It's the most in-depth report of its kind, and with less than four weeks until a Federal Australian election, its release comes at a pivotal time.
Today at 10am in the Waratah Room of NSW Parliament House with the sponsorship of NSW Greens MP Dr Mehreen Faruqi, Australian Women in Support of Women on Nauru's specialist group of researchers, journalists, lawyers, campaigners and advocates; including former WA Labor Premier Professor Carmen Lawrence, asylum seeker advocate Pamela Curr, media academic Professor Wendy Bacon, investigative journalist Julie Macken and myself will be launching the report to the Australian public and media.
What we can hope for now is that this issue gains the traction that it deserves, and that politicians from both sides of the spectrum finally stand up on this deeply disturbing issue.
After the report's release today at 10am, we will share it through this email network, our Facebook and Twitter.
With your support we have grown to a network of over 30, 000 people advocating for the immediate release of women on Nauru. We really could not have written this report or come this far without you.
Thank you for all your support in helping some of the world's most vulnerable people,
Luisa Low, Australian Women in Support of Women on Nauru
