Dear friends,
After Tuesday's fantastic launch of the report, 'Abuse Condoned, Protection Denied: Women on Nauru at Risk' we had the chance to draw breath and plan where to next for us and our commitment to bear witness to the struggle of the women on Nauru and to holding those responsible to account.
And this is the plan we have come up with.
We will use the remaining funds to employ someone to keep our website and Facebook resources up to date and active, and keep generating stories and media focus for the next five or six months – yes it will be a very part-time position.
We think this is a good use of the money because what became really clear in the process of writing the report is how much is known by so many people about what is going on. But also how hard it is to chase the stories and confirm the details, because the details are vital and we can’t afford to get anything wrong.
We also want the website and Facebook page to function as a resource for international media and national and local groups. So the job will also include keeping current lists of resources and people.
Lastly, but certainly not least, we discussed a strategy used by women across the globe - pots & pans!
We realised that despite there being an election campaign going on, neither of the two major parties were willing to listen. What better way to make us heard than by turning up to stump speeches with pots and pans and making a huge ruckus?
If that’s what it takes to get politicians to listen to the cries of women from Nauru, we’ll turn up with the pots and the pans and even the kitchen sink.
Once again, we want to thank all of you for your sharing and Tweeting and working together to keep this project alive and vital and growing.
We have three weeks of this election to see if we can make a dint in this terrible bi-partisan agreement to keep women in situation where Protection is Denied and Abuse is Condoned.
For the women on Nauru,
Julie Macken
