Petition updateAn open letter from the women of Australia to Prime Minister Malcolm TurnbullWhy don't people think women's rights are human rights?

Today is Human Rights Day.
There are many who do not associate women's rights with human rights - people who believe the subjugation of and violence against women to be common place, part of the fabric of everyday society - something to be ignored and in many cases far too easily accepted.
In Australia we have seen 78 women die from domestic violence this year alone: https://www.change.org/p/prime-minister-turnbull-women-s-refuges-save-lives-funding-needed-now
On Nauru, women like Abyan are still being kept in horrific conditions by the Australian government, who turns a blind eye to the sexual violence and abuse women like her are facing.
Even worse, politicians use it to aid their own sick PR stunts.
And this is all a symptom of simply not regarding women's rights as human rights.
Last week we updated you on how far we'd come on our campaign to send Wendy Bacon, Professor Carmen Lawrence and Claire O'Connor to Nauru. Our aim is to present our case at the UN on International Women's Day in 2016, to expose the human rights abuses of asylum seekers in Australian detention.
This week our friends at the Women's Electoral Lobby are campaigning to ensure funding for women's domestic violence refuges - services which do nothing but save women's lives. If you can, please sign their petition. December sees a skyrocketing of domestic violence and abuse, and this year many women will have nowhere to go.
Thank you so much,
Luisa Low
