Not even 24 hours have passed and Malcolm Turnbull who is now in charge of our beautiful country is already pushing harmful policies through parliament. "The bill for the Cashless Centrelink Debit Card has just passed the house of reps", as tweeted by Alan Tudge just 23 hours ago. This trial will authorise up to 10,000 people to be covered and controlled by this demeaning and controlling policy, starting February 2016. Every single person on a working age payment will be covered by the trial and be issued with this Centrelink Debit Card with 80% of their income quarantined. Many welfare recipients and welfare organisations have objected to this bill, yet their voices are falling on deaf ears. This bill will not improve living standards of welfare recipients, but instead entrench them into further poverty. Recipients will only be able to shop where EFTPOS is available. Op Shops, Farmers Markets, Garage Sales and Children's Tuck Shops are just a handful of places where recipients will be limited to purchase from due to their limited cash income of 20%. Many recipients who pay rent in cash will become homeless with this card. Please share with your friends, family and social networks to raise awareness of this harmful policy.
