Joshua Kaluvia is one of the two accused in the murder of Reza Barati in February 2014. The testimony of witness, Behnam Satah, put him behind bars while the trial is ongoing. Today it was reported that he escaped jail in Lorengau on Manus on 28 March. It is a process that has been expected to bring about chaos, as heavily armed guards forcibly move the prisoners from rooms they have shared with their friends. Behnam has always been in danger, ever since he witnessed the murder of Reza Barati, and most particularly since he gave evidence in the trial of the accused. Today, with the accused on the loose on Manus and with a dangerous confrontation between prisoners and guards made possible because of the division of the prisoners, Behnam's danger is acute. The Australian government set up, supervises and funds this prison camp. They have done nothing to protect Behnam.
