Dear friends,
Thank you for signing this petition. Behnam's health is not good. He has ongoing severe pain in his chest and decreasing use of his left arm and left leg. Additionally he is constantly being threatened and intimidated by the Manus guards. I wrote to Malcolm Turnbull about his safety on 25 November 2015. Turnbull wrote back a few days later and said the letter was being referred to Peter Dutton. Dutton has not replied.
The situation is urgent and can't be ignored. I hand delivered the petition with the first 600 signatures with a covering letter to Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday 7 January. Strangely the letter was referred to the Australia Post office in Parliament - where it would be sent out and sent back - in the name of security. I would have thought they could have checked the mail inside Parliament without having to send it out!
In the letter I asked Turnbull for his immediate action and I will continue to send the petition to Turnbull as the numbers increase. Perhaps the next iteration will be at 1000 signatures. I am grateful for your support and would appreciate it if you could forward the email link to your lists and friends.
The Manus Island and Nauru detention centres are an international disgrace. The reckless treatment of Behnam Satah - who is the most important witness in the trial of those accused of the murder of Reza Barati - is a demonstration of the total failure of these offshore camps. Thank you for supporting Behnam Satah and the principle of the protection of witnesses.
