In the scandal-ridden decades of the 1950's and 1960's, thousands of Greek children were adopted abroad to the United States of America and other foreign countries. These adoptions were "irregular", at the very least, while some were decidedly illegal.  Greek-born adoptees searching for their roots have faced a lack of transparency from the Greek government, a lack of unfettered access to their records, the lack of a DNA database sponsored by the Greek state, and endless difficulties in claiming their birthright of Greek citizenship. The Eftychia Project is working to advocate on behalf of all Greek-born adoptees with the Greek government to affect change on these vitally important issues. These issues are near and dear to the hearts of the Board of Directors of The Eftychia Project, as all of us are Greek-born adoptees. Knowing our roots and our biological origins are basic human rights of all adoptees, but that cannot happen without transparency, unfettered access to records and a DNA database sponsored by the Greek state. And Greek citizenship is our birthright. We deserve an official, tangible acknowledgement of our Greek nationality and identity from the Greek state that sent us away.
