 Divest from Genocide!

This is an open letter to the Finance Director of Aberystwyth University, concerning the University’s ethical investment policy, and the University’s investments in companies complicit in the genocide in Gaza, Palestine. The University has investments in several companies that supply and finance Israel's arms trade, and facilitate the surveillance and oppression of Palestinian civilians.

Based on FOI requests from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the University has a total of £356,436 in investments, divided among the following companies:

Airbus - Airbus signed a $600 million deal with Israel Aerospace to lease Heron TP drones to the German military. Israel uses drones such as these patrol the skies of the besieged Gaza Strip. Between 2008 and 2021 Airbus applied to the British government for an export license to supply weapons and military technology to Israel.

Alstrom - It was included on the United Nations OHCHR’s list of business enterprises active in Israel’s illegal settlements, based on stolen Palestinian land. WhoProfits report that Alstom is involved in the construction and operation of the Jerusalem Light Rail project, directly as well as through its fully owned subsidiary, Citadis Israel, which is the maintenance contractor for the project. The JLR project contravenes international law since it solidifies Israel’s grip on occupied Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem.

AXA - Axa invests in a range of companies active in Israel’s illegal settlements, including Israeli banks financing the construction and expansion of Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land. This includes Bank Leumi and Israel Discount Bank.

BAE Systems - As reported by Investigate, it manufactures weapons and military technology used by Israel in its militarised attacks on Palestinians.

Barclays - According to research released by PSC, War on Want and Campaign Against Arms Trade, it holds over £1bn in shares in, and provides financial services to, nine companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology, used in its militarised violence against Palestinians.

HSBC - Research by War on Want in 2017 found that HSBC invests over £830million in, and provides financial services worth up to £19billion for, companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used in its militarised attacks on Palestinians.

Safran -  has provided equipment including finger print scanners, used by Israeli forces in the occupied Palestinian territory.

 

The following is stated in Aberystwyth University’s ethical investment policy:

The University does not intentionally invest directly in organisations with high exposure to activities or substances which are injurious to health, destabilise community cohesion, threaten international stability or contribute to the development and maintenance of poverty, slavery, the abuse of children and the use of torture; or in organisations that are clearly subsidiaries or closely linked to the organisations described above. The University specifically does not invest directly in organisations involved in the following activities: 

...controversial weapons and weapons systems (based on the Sustainalytics definition as: antipersonnel mines, biological weapons, chemical weapons, cluster weapons, depleted uranium ammunition, nuclear weapons, and white phosphorus weapons); 

By investing in the aforementioned companies which are complicit in the Israeli siege and bombardment of Gaza, the University is failing to adhere to its investment policy. These companies and organisations are guilty of directly supporting a regime that is causing massive injury to life and health in Palestine.

Israel is currently creating conditions in Gaza that are inconsistent with sustaining life for its 2.3 million residents

In the West Bank, abduction, abuse, and torture of children is ongoing. Every year, hundreds of children are abducted, detained, and held without charge. They report physical and psychological abuse at the hands of their captors. 

Community cohesion has been destabilised catastrophically in Gaza, as thousands of people have been killed, and millions of people have been forced to leave their homes. Children have become orphans, and entire families have been wiped out when their homes have been flattened by bombs. Schools, Universities, hospitals, libraries, UN shelters and refugee camps have been bombed. 

The policy states that the University does not invest in controversial weapons. The Israeli army deploys controversial weapons, such as the internationally banned white phosphorus. But we would argue that any weapon is controversial when used against densely populated areas of civilians and children. 

Please confirm whether the university still has investments with these complicit companies. If this is the case, we urge the University to divest from these companies as soon as possible.

Dyma lythyr agored at Gyfarwyddwr Cyllid Prifysgol Aberystwyth sy’n ymwneud â pholisi buddsoddi moesegol y Brifysgol, a buddsoddiadau'r Brifysgol mewn cwmnïau sy'n cyfranogi  yn yr hil-laddiad yn Gaza, Palesteina. Mae gan y Brifysgol fuddsoddiadau mewn sawl cwmni sy'n cyflenwi ac yn ariannu masnach arfau Israel, ac yn hwyluso gwyliadwriaeth a gormes dinasyddion Palesteinaidd.

Yn seiliedig ar geisiadau Rhyddid Gwybodaeth gan Ymgyrch Cefnogi Palesteina, mae gan y Brifysgol gyfanswm o £356,436 mewn buddsoddiadau, wedi'i rannu ymhlith y cwmnïau canlynol:

 

Airbus - Llofnododd Airbus gytundeb $ 600 miliwn gydag Israel Aerospace i brydlesu dronau Heron TP i fyddin yr Almaen. Mae Israel yn defnyddio dronau fel rhain i batrolio awyr Llain Gaza sydd dan warchae. Rhwng 2008 a 2021 gwnaeth Airbus gais i lywodraeth Prydain am drwydded allforio i gyflenwi arfau a thechnoleg filwrol i Israel.

Alstrom - Fe'i cynhwyswyd ar restr OHCHR y Cenhedloedd Unedig o fentrau busnes sy'n weithredol yng ngwladychiadau anghyfreithlon Israel wedi eu sefydlu ar dir wedi ei ladrata oddi ar Palestina. Mae WhoProfits yn adrodd bod Alstom yn ymwneud ag adeiladu a gweithredu prosiect Rheilffordd Ysgafn Jerwsalem yn uniongyrchol yn ogystal â thrwy ei is-gwmni dan berchnogaeth lawn, Citadis Israel, sef contractwr cynnal a chadw’r prosiect. Mae prosiect JLR yn mynd yn groes i gyfraith ryngwladol gan ei fod yn atgyfnerthu gafael Israel ar dir Palesteinaidd a feddiannwyd gan gynnwys Dwyrain Jerwsalem.

Axa - Mae Axa yn buddsoddi mewn ystod o gwmnïau sy'n weithredol yng ngwladychiadau anghyfreithlon Israel, gan gynnwys banciau Israel sy'n ariannu adeiladu ac ehangu gwladychiadau Israel ar dir Palestina  sydd wedi'i ddwyn. Mae hyn yn cynnwys Banc Leumi a Banc Disgownt Israel.

Systemau BAE - Fel yr adroddwyd gan Investigate, mae'n cynhyrchu arfau a thechnoleg filwrol a ddefnyddir gan Israel yn ei ymosodiadau milwriaethus ar Balestiniaid.

Yn ôl ymchwil a ryddhawyd gan PSC, War on Want a Campaign Against Arms Trade, mae'n dal dros £1bn mewn cyfranddaliadau mewn, ac yn darparu gwasanaethau ariannol i, naw cwmni sy'n cyflenwi arfau a thechnoleg filwrol i Israel, a ddefnyddir yn y trais milwriaethus yn erbyn y Palestiniaid.

HSBC - Canfu ymchwil gan War on Want yn 2017 fod HSBC yn buddsoddi dros £830 miliwn ac yn darparu gwasanaethau ariannol gwerth hyd at £19 biliwn ar gyfer cwmnïau sy'n cyflenwi arfau a thechnoleg filwrol i Israel a ddefnyddir yn yr ymosodiadau milwriaethus ar y Palestiniaid.

Safran - wedi darparu offer gan gynnwys sganwyr print bys, a ddefnyddir gan luoedd Israel yn y diriogaeth Palesteinaidd a feddiannir.

 

Nodir y canlynol ym mholisi buddsoddi moesegol Prifysgol Aberystwyth:

Nid yw’r Brifysgol yn buddsoddi’n uniongyrchol yn fwriadol mewn sefydliadau sy’n arbennig o agored i weithgareddau neu sylweddau sy’n peryglu iechyd, ansefydlogi cydlyniant cymunedol, bygwth sefydlogrwydd rhyngwladol neu gyfrannu at ddatblygu a chynnal tlodi, caethwasiaeth, cam-drin plant a defnyddio artaith; neu mewn sefydliadau sy’n amlwg yn is-gwmnïau neu’n gysylltiedig agos â’r sefydliadau a ddisgrifir uchod. Nid yw’r Brifysgol yn buddsoddi’n uniongyrchol mewn sefydliadau sy’n ymwneud â’r pethau canlynol:

...• arfau a systemau arfau dadleuol (sef, yn ôl diffiniad Sustainalytics: ffrwydron tir gwrth-bersonél, arfau biolegol, arfau cemegol, arfau clwstwr, ffrwydron rhyfel sy’n cynnwys wraniwm wedi’i ddisbyddu, arfau niwclear, ac arfau ffosfforws gwyn); 

Trwy fuddsoddi yn y cwmnïau uchod sy'n cyfranogi yng ngwarchae a bomio Israel yn Gaza, nid yw’r Brifysgol yn cadw at ei pholisi buddsoddi. Mae'r cwmnïau a'r sefydliadau hyn yn euog o gefnogi cyfundrefn sy'n achosi niwed enfawr i fywyd ac iechyd ym Mhalestina.

Ar hyn o bryd, mae Israel yn creu amodau yn Gaza sy'n anghyson â chynnal bywyd i'w 2.3 miliwn o drigolion.

Yn y Lan Orllewinol, mae cipio, cam-drin ac arteithio plant yn parhau. Bob blwyddyn, mae cannoedd o blant yn cael eu cipio, eu cadw a'u dal heb gyhuddiad. Maent yn adrodd am gam-drin corfforol a seicolegol yn nwylo y sawl sydd wedi eu caethiwo.

Ansefydlogwyd cydlyniant cymunedol yn drychinebus yn Gaza, wrth i filoedd o bobl gael eu lladd, a miliynau o bobl gael eu gorfodi i adael eu cartrefi. Mae plant wedi dod yn blant amddifad, ac mae teuluoedd cyfan wedi cael eu difa wrth i bomiau gwastatáu eu cartrefi. Mae ysgolion, prifysgolion, ysbytai, llyfrgelloedd, llochesi'r Cenhedloedd Unedig a gwersylloedd ffoaduriaid wedi cael eu bomio.

Mae'r polisi yn nodi nad yw'r Brifysgol yn buddsoddi mewn arfau dadleuol. Mae byddin Israel yn defnyddio arfau dadleuol, fel y ffosfforws gwyn a waharddwyd yn rhyngwladol. Ond, byddem yn dadlau bod unrhyw arf yn ddadleuol pan gaiff ei ddefnyddio mewn ardaloedd poblog ac yn erbyn y boblogaeth sifiliaid a phlant.

A wnewch chi gadarnhau, os gwelwch yn dda pa un ai oed gan y brifysgol fuddsoddiadau gyda'r cwmnïau cyfranogol yma o hyd. Os mae ie yw’r ateb yna rydym yn annog y Brifysgol i ddad-fuddsoddi yn y cwmnïau yma cyn gynted â phosibl.
