About Us

We are students of St Brigid's College dedicated to preventing idling in our school community. Over the past year we have researched and explored idling and the effects it can have on both human health and the environment. With this petition we aim to put a stop, specifically, on the idling of school buses, so we need your help.

What is Idling?

Idling is the act of leaving the engine of a vehicle running when not in motion. When idle, vehicles release a harmful gas known as nitrogen dioxide

Why is this a Problem?

Breathing in Nitrous dioxides in our atmosphere can cause huge negative health effects, some of which include dizziness, increases risk of asthma, unconsciousness, illness, infertility issues and, unfortunately, death. 
Illnesses caused by Nitrous dioxides include pulmonary edema, pneumonitis, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, emphysema, and even methemoglobinemia. 

We know for sure that this is most definitely not something we want our young people exposed too, and so that brings us to the most important question;

What will Signing this Petition Do?

In early February, we met with our local County Council to discuss the issue of idling, specifically in regards to school buses. The Council then agreed to bring this issue to the Department of Transport.

By signing this petition, you are helping us in displaying to the Department of Transport just how important this issue is and how much it means to the general public that it be rectified
