The Issue

Turning Point USA, a recognized conservative student organization, is scheduled to hold an event at Utah State University (USU) in Logan, UT on September 30th after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed. This proposed gathering, especially in light of recent incidents, raises grave concerns for the safety and well-being of our student community. This has intensified fears of potential violence and disorder. Our campus, celebrated for its inclusive and peaceful environment, should not risk being transformed into a politically charged battleground.

USU has a firm commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all its students, faculty, and staff. The presence of an organization that has been linked with controversial and often polarizing views presents a real danger to that commitment. According to the FBI, the United States has seen an alarming increase in hate crimes and politically motivated violence over the past decade. Hosting organizations known for their divisive rhetoric only increases the likelihood of such incidents.

Furthermore, USU is an academic institution where the focus should be on education, personal growth, and nurturing a community of understanding and respect. Allowing Turning Point USA to hold events on our campus risks undermining these values. The potential for conflict distracts from the educational goals and the spirit of unity and collaboration that defines the Aggie experience.

We recognize the importance of free speech but believe that safety and educational integrity must come first. It's important to recall that several universities across the country have already taken steps to limit or re-evaluate invitations to groups with reputations for inciting unrest.

We urge the USU administration to protect our vibrant educational community by banning Turning Point USA from our campus events. Additionally, we propose increasing dialogue on campus safety and fostering environments where diverse opinions can be expressed without fear or hostility.

Please sign this petition to ensure that Utah State University remains a safe and welcoming place for all students.
