As a resident of the Westside of San Bernardino specifically in the area bordering North of 5th Street to 9th Street and West of Mt Vernon Ave to Garcia Street in Ward 1, I am gravely alarmed by the conversion of a local lot into a parking area for diesel trucks and trailers. This course of action has been undertaken without adequate examination of the risks to our community, and primarily, to our children. The close proximity of an elementary school and the frequent play of children on our streets make these large vehicles a pervasive, potential danger. 

Trucks, particularly diesel ones, are known contributors to air and noise pollution. A study by Environmental Health Perspectives confirms that diesel exhaust can cause lung diseases and increases the risk of asthma attacks, especially in children (source: Environmental Health Perspectives). Further, excessive noise pollution from these trucks can adversely affect the physical and mental health of residents, especially the elderly and children (source: World Health Organization).

This decision drastically alters the quality of life in our neighborhood. It introduces unnecessary nuisances and risks into our daily lives. We urgently call on the city officials of San Bernardino to reconsider the approved sale and prioritize the safety and wellbeing of the residents of this Westside corridor in Ward 1. This is not merely a plea on behalf of a single street or city – it’s a fight for the rights and security of all westside citizens.
