Prevent the Sale of Bruce Memorial Hall by Mount Remarkable District Council

Prevent the Sale of Bruce Memorial Hall by Mount Remarkable District Council

The issue

Update 13 March 2023:

Again - thank you everyone for your support in signing the petition. Unfortunately our requests for a meeting with the CEO fell on deaf ears and he wasn't interested in meeting with us and just wanted to reinforce he couldn't stop the sale process or didn't want to consult with us any further.

Today the Hall was sold for $26,000 to a bidder at the auction.

We can only hope this successful bidder does something great with the Hall and that it happens soon.

Again - thanks for your support!

Paula

Update:

Thank you everyone that has supported this petition - the response has been overwhelming!

We have done various media this week with more scheduled next week, which has made the coverage state wide and hopefully beyond!

We have also written to the CEO of the District Council of Mount Remarkable seeking an urgent meeting - we are awaiting a response.

We will keep you updated with any progress and again, thank you!

The Bruce Memorial Hall, a cherished and historic community asset in South Australia, is under threat of being sold off by the District Council of Mount Remarkable.

This building was built and donated to the town of Bruce over 100 years ago by several local community members to be used as a community and memorial hall to celebrate the men who fought for our country and as a place for community to gather.

It is a solid building which was built well and has weathered the harshest of conditions you can expect out here on the Willochra Plain, it still stands and has seen many memorable celebrations, yet council is treating it as another asset that needs to be sold.

Current Council has hassled the ancestors of those who built it for payment of rates that they do not owe rather than looking into the history and importance of this building.

As a 4th generation citizen of Bruce I find it reprehensible that no communication or discussion has been had with the people that live here and call our little community home. Any attempts made by us for information on the process and sale has been met with contempt.

We may be a small outlier of the District Council of Mount Remarkable but our pioneering history is no less important than anywhere else.

Rather than selling this important piece of our history I ask council to invest a modest amount and give it back to the people of Bruce and surrounding areas.

We welcome any reply or discussion from council and community.

We ask that the District Council of Mount Remarkable halt the sale of the Bruce Memorial Hall and go back and work with community members to maintain this important community asset.

Please sign this petition urging the District Council of Mount Remarkable not to sell off our beloved Bruce Memorial Hall.
