Prevent the Phasing Out of Cash and Cheques in Australia

The issue

Our society is increasingly moving towards a cashless system, with digital transactions becoming the norm. However, this shift poses significant risks to Australian citizens and businesses. When internet banking systems fail, as they have in past incidents (Reserve Bank of Australia, 2020), people are left without access to their money. Additionally, not everyone has access to or can afford digital banking services - according to a report by the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN), around 1 million Australians are not digitally included. This move also threatens the livelihoods of older Australians who rely on cheques for their transactions (Australian Banking Association, 2019). We must ensure that our financial system remains inclusive and reliable for all Australians. Therefore, we urge lawmakers to reconsider any legislation that would phase out cash and cheques completely from our society. Sign this petition if you believe in preserving diverse payment methods for all Australians.
