Prevent the demolition of affordable housing and historic buildings in Calgary

Prevent the demolition of affordable housing and historic buildings in Calgary
The Issue
The two houses and apartment building pictured, as well as an additional house around the corner, are situated in the historic Mission neighbourhood in Calgary; they currently face the looming threat of demolition, slated to be replaced by a multi-story new construction project.
In Calgary, AB, Canada, we are facing a crisis. Our historic buildings and affordable housing units are under threat from new development projects. These structures not only represent our city's rich history but also provide essential accommodation for residents.
There is a blanket notion that density creates affordability. However, overall, rents in Alberta grew by 20 percent last year, the highest in the country. The news comes as affordable options become increasingly scarce. Affordable housing is crucial for our community's diversity and inclusivity. Removing affordable housing that already exists in favor of density displaces those who rely on it most and exacerbates homelessness.
Similarly, heritage housing contributes to our neighbourhood's identity and historical significance. The destruction of historic buildings erases our cultural heritage. These structures serve as physical reminders of our past and contribute to the unique character that defines Calgary, and more importantly the historic district of Mission.
We call on local government officials to reconsider these development plans. We urge them to prioritize preserving our history and ensuring housing affordability over short-term economic gains from new developments.
We have until April 04 to make an impact on the final ruling. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving Calgary's historical architecture and maintaining affordable housing for all its residents.
