The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the proposed construction of a data center at 100 Water St., an abandoned cannabis growing facility in the industrial Flats neighborhood in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Massachusetts is my home, and I cannot sit idly by while plans that could have devastating environmental impacts move forward..

Environmental Concerns:
Data centers are notorious for consuming enormous amounts of electricity, often being powered by fossil fuels, which increase greenhouse gas emissions. They also require significant amounts of water for cooling processes, exacerbating water scarcity issues —a concern particularly relevant as global water resources become increasingly strained.! Moreover, the construction process itself could disrupt local ecosystems and contribute to pollution in the Connecticut River, which is crucial to the area's wildlife and agriculture. While economic benefits are often cited as reasons to support such developments, we must consider if they outweigh the environmental costs. Green spaces, clean air, and sustainable resources are invaluable; losing them may come at a heavier price than any short-term economic gain. Instead of allowing this project to proceed, we should focus on encouraging investments in clean energy and sustainable development projects. Strategies like enhancing energy efficiency in existing infrastructure and supporting renewable energy sources would be far better.

As a resident who treasures the natural beauty and ecological balance of our region, I urge you to consider the long-term consequences and advocate for a future that prioritizes sustainable development.

Please join me in supporting this cause and sign this petition to prevent the construction of a potentially harmful data center in Holyoke, MA. Together, we can stand for a greener, more sustainable future.
