Prevent the Closure of St. James Church in Ashton-under-Lyne
Prevent the Closure of St. James Church in Ashton-under-Lyne
The Issue
St. James Church, a Grade 2 listed building, is under threat of closure by the Church of England. This historic church has been a cornerstone of our community in Ashton-under-Lyne for generations and its potential closure poses significant concerns. Not only would we lose an important place of worship and community gathering, but there is also a risk that the vacant building could become a focal point for antisocial behaviour in an already challenging area.
According to UK Crime Stats, Ashton-under-Lyne has seen an increase in antisocial behaviour incidents over the past year (UK Crime Stats). The closure of St. James Church could exacerbate this issue further.
We believe that preserving our local heritage and maintaining safe communal spaces should be prioritised over closing down such vital institutions as St. James Church.
We urge you to join us in petitioning against this proposed closure and help protect both our community's history and its future safety. Please sign this petition today!
