Imagine battling a life-threatening illness at 16, feeling the immense weight of the world on your shoulders, and suddenly receive heart-wrenching news that the very foundation of your support system is being torn apart. Ofelia Torres, a brave student at Lake View High School in Chicago, IL, is fighting Stage IV cancer—a battle no child should have to face. Her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, has been her rock, offering solace and strength during unimaginably difficult times.

On Friday, October 17, Ofelia’s doctors temporarily discharged her after a grueling 39-day hospital stay so she could spend some much-needed time with family and friends. The next day, however, they were faced with the unbearable news that her dad had been detained by ICE and would be facing deportation. The Torres family now faces insurmountable hardships during an incredibly trying time. Ruben’s absence has compounded the distress and uncertainty that was already plaguing the family and has left Ofelia without the unwavering support of the person she needs most during this critical period.

Ruben has been a dedicated family man, known for his hard work and commitment to providing a better life for his family. Deporting him would only devastate his family and community. Keeping him here is not just about one family; it's about the principles of compassion and care that bind us together.

We appeal to ICE and the local authorities to recognize the humanitarian necessity of allowing Ruben Torres to remain with his daughter and family during this critical time. Children battling cancer need their parents by their side—especially when their world seems to be crumbling.
