Prevent Littering by Implementing a Statewide Bottle Bill in North Carolina

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are residents of North Carolina writing to express our deep concern regarding the persistent issue of littering that detracts from the natural beauty of our state, poses a threat to our wildlife, and diminishes the well-being of our communities. In response to this ongoing problem, we urge the introduction of a statewide bottle bill - a proven solution to enhance recycling efforts and reduce litter.

A container deposit law would necessitate a small deposit on beverage containers at the time of purchase, refundable upon their return. This initiative has been successful in other states, achieving recycling rates of beverage containers as high as 90%, far surpassing the national average. The adoption of such a law in North Carolina could significantly lessen litter across our landscapes, parks, and waterways, reduce waste in our landfills, and bolster recycling activities. Furthermore, it holds the potential to create employment opportunities in the recycling and waste management sectors and generate additional state and local revenue.

The environmental and economic benefits observed in states with similar legislation underscore the effectiveness of bottle bills. By adopting this policy, North Carolina could become a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. We are optimistic about the positive impacts a bottle bill could have on North Carolina's environment and economy. We eagerly await your support for this critical initiative, confident that together we can take a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for our state.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and your dedication to serving the best interests of North Carolina.

Also, please email our state’s legislators and tell them you’re sick of seeing litter all over the place and want a bottle bill! Use this link to find the contact information for your representatives: https://www.ncleg.gov/findyourlegislators
