Hi everyone,
It's been a while since this petition started, but despite the silence I've been keeping an eye on the program and discussing it with anyone within the district who will listen. That being said, I've been given an update on the status of Lifewise within the district and wanted to share.
Given the existing policy allowing released time religious instruction in the district, the district's legal council has recommended the district allow lifewise to move forward on a trial basis. The plan, as I understand it, is that it will start as a trial at Kinder for second grade students. I don't have a timeline on when that will go into effect, but have been told that it will not impact specials for any students - attendance will take place during lunch / recess for those that sign up, and no literature will be handed out at the school in support of or against lifewise.
My understanding is that this trial will be primarily to test the feasibility of the program, and should it not work out the board may need to re-evaluate the Released Time Religious Instruction policy. This all appears to be completely in line with what we were hoping to accomplish with our petition. I would suggest anyone with children at Kinder keep a close eye on the program and notify the school board and Dr Blessing if you feel the program starts overstepping their boundaries or interfering with day-to-day activities.
If you have any further concerns or questions, I would recommend reaching out to Dr Blessing directly. I also want to take a moment to thank everyone who has signed the petition or expressed their support of keeping our school system open and inclusive for students of all backgrounds.
Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
