The Issue

High school is a time to explore new things, pursue interests, and build a foundation for the future. At Lake Zurich High School, students have the unique opportunity to delve into a variety of elective courses that spark passion and inspire learning. Whether it's discovering a hidden talent in art, developing skills in technology, or finding a new love for a foreign language, these elective courses play a crucial role in broadening students' horizons.

However, the proposed reduction of a class period in our school day would significantly limit these opportunities. With fewer class periods, students will have fewer chances to explore different subjects outside the core curriculum. This change could deprive students of valuable experiences that contribute to their personal growth and future readiness.

Consider the long-term impact on our students' development. High school is not just about meeting requirements; it's about finding and developing interests that can lead to future careers or lifelong hobbies. By cutting class periods, we risk narrowing students’ educational experiences and leaving them ill-prepared for the diverse challenges they will face in college and beyond.

Moreover, elective courses often provide a necessary respite from the rigors of core subjects, allowing students to recharge and engage creatively. They offer a well-rounded education that fosters emotional and intellectual growth.

To maintain the rich variety of courses that Lake Zurich High School currently offers, it is crucial that we oppose this reduction in class periods. Keeping a full schedule not only supports academic achievement but also enriches the student experience by fostering creativity, innovation, and discovery.

We urge the school administration to reconsider this change. By preserving the current structure of our school day, we can continue to offer a diverse, engaging, and comprehensive education to all students at Lake Zurich High School.
