The Issue

We at Wednesbury 2000, Splinter Studios & Kickstarts Dance are deeply concerned about the proposed plan to convert a neighbouring building into a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO). We feel compelled to speak out to stop this development from happening.

This building sits on an integral street for the local community with many clubs, classes and activities being held every day. These groups are used for all ages but especially for children and vulnerable adults. The prospect of this space being transformed into an HMO threatens the safety of all those that attend.

While we understand the need for affordable housing options, converting this building into an HMO is not the solution. HMOs often experience higher rates of turnover among residents, with insufficient oversight. We cannot control who should live in these spaces, so therefore have no idea how safe the area will now become.  This is not conducive to a family-friendly environment that this space desperately needs.

We shouldn't overlook the potential implications for crime rates, as studies have suggested a link between HMOs and increased levels of crime and disorder due to transient tenant populations.

We urge the local council and developers to reconsider this proposal and look into more community-oriented housing solutions that would nurture, rather than hinder, our community's growth and security.
