On 27th December 2023, my family was rocked by a tragedy. My grandson Preston Camps-Lee was killed when he fell off a motorbike he had bought online for £400. He was just 15 years old.

The bike was advertised on Facebook Marketplace as a 'beast' and 'ready to ride'. It was a beast - it killed my grandson.

Preston's tragic death shows the urgent need to revise our laws. Preston, without getting parental permission, purchased an off-road motorcycle which had several mechanical issues, including faulty brakes and underinflated tyres. 

On 24th March 2025, the coroner's inquest into Preston's avoidable accident revealed the alarmingly lax restrictions surrounding off-road motorcycle sales. 

Whilst the law prevents under 16s from purchasing petrol, there is a gaping loophole allowing those too young to even drive, to buy powerful, potentially dangerous vehicles, like the off-road pit bike that claimed Preston's life. 

We implore decision-makers to impose a law that sets a strict minimum age limit for buying such off-road vehicles. We assert that this isn't merely a policy change. Instead, it is a crucial step towards safeguarding our children's lives from similar tragic accidents. 

It will also ensure that the painful experience endured by our family is not replicated. Let's advocate for legal reform. The law should protect our youth, not put them at risk.
