Appeal of Albanian Diaspora on the opening of negotiations for Albania’s membership in the European Union

Your Excellencies, presidents and prime ministers of the member states of the European Union!

The enlargement policy of the European Union resulted critical, not only for the political and economic reforms of  all current  member states, but also as a attraction force for all other countries aspiring to join the European Union.

The ancient Albanian people living in a geographical area historically serving as a crossroad of opposing global interests and different cultures, have never lost their embodied European cultural foundation.

The orientation towards European ideas formed a constant base from the beginning of the Albanian state and throughout its cultural development. Even during the period when its state ideology was totalitarian, Albania’s fate was shared by other non-democratic European political coalitions at a high cost for their countries and peoples.

The Albanian people, inspired by Euro-Atlantic ideas, overthrew the anti-democratic and dictatorial system with the historic slogan “We want Albania like Europe.”

All these ideas inspired and guided the Albanian people on its path of entry into the large European family.

These democratic ideas backed by the neighbouring European and other Western countries, constituted the pillars of economic and political stabilization. They are the    foundations of Albania’s political, economic, legal and institutional model, in its ultimate goal EU membership.

Aware of this chosen path and sacrifices and determined in its ultimate goal, the Albanians have completed many reforms to meet the Copenhagen and Madrid criteria.

The path of democratization of Albania carried out so far has passed through various difficulties and the Albanian people should be encouraged and helped to leave behind the painful past and its mistakes as well as the  mistakes of Old Europe..

Fostering good neighbourhood relations and overcoming historical anachronisms, by including the fate of their development within the great European family, the Albanian people and their Nation have considerably contributed to regional peace and stability.

Aware that the process of democratization of the country and its ability to become an outstanding member of the European Union will take more effort and time, Albanians think that any setback or delay in this historical process may cause costly mistakes and fatalities not only for their country and nation, but also for the fragile region of southeast Europe and beyond.

We, the sons and daughters of the Albanians, already integrated in the European countries and contributing to their overall development, constitute a compelling example of our nationals’ abilities to adapt and act as equals within the European societies.

We, the Albanian Diaspora, comprising hundreds of thousands of members in all of the European countries, are live examples of proper conduct and civility in the countries that have opened the doors to us. We shall be a great support and guarantee for our homeland’s democratization and Europeanization.

Please, consider this request from the part of the Albanian Diaspora, and take a prompt decision for the opening Albania’s accession negotiations to the European Union.
