Changing the Lives of Two Sun Bears!
I'd like to take this opportunity to share a message we received from two Sun Bears in Indonesia... (edited for length)
Hi, our names are Bedhu and Tegan, we are Indonesian Sun Bears. We would like to request your help to finish our new enclosure so we will be able to learn to climb and dig and swim, learn life skills that will give us the potential to someday be rehabilitated and return to our true home in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra.
The enclosure was first started approximately 3 years ago with donations made from a fundraising program, unfortunately, the donations dried up and the enclosure was left incomplete. The group that cares for us has already put so much time and money to get the enclosure to its current stage so it would be really sad for us if the cage is left incomplete.
Our current enclosures were only supposed to be a temporary means as we were very small when we first arrived here but we are growing very fast and are already outgrowing them.
The animal rescue centre where we live, is dedicated to confiscating animals that are being kept illegally as pets by private owners, mass traders or businesses.
Local people lack the knowledge to keep us safe and healthy and we are used mainly for public entertainment, signs of power or generating prophets from our body parts. We are so grateful to have been rescued while we were young as we could have ended up in a far worse situation.
We will tell you more about ourselves.
My name is Bedhu. I am a Bornean male sun bear. I am the older one of us and arrived here when I was a very small baby almost 5 years ago. I was found in the back of a van in a cardboard box being auctioned to the highest bidder. I can’t imagine what would have happened if my captor was never stopped by the police during my transportation. The fate and whereabouts of my mother is unknown. When I first arrived at the centre I would be taken out to walk and climb but now I am bigger I cannot leave my cage for safety reasons, I love honey covered logs. I love to rip them apart with my big claws. I can rip a coconut open in under a minute too. The volunteers are always really impressed with that.
Hello, my name is Tegan. I am a young female Sumatran sun bear. I only arrived at the centre as a very young baby 2 years ago. I was so young the staff had to bottle feed me until I could eat proper food. I was taken from a mass trader along with many other endangered animals. Many of the animals that were confiscated did not survive the journey to rescue as they were in poor health or, like me, had been separated from their mothers far too early after birth. Fortunately, I was strong to enough to make it but this experience has seriously damaged my confidence. Although, staff and professionals are sure I will be able to develop into a capable bear with a strong potential for rehabilitation and returning to the jungle.
This is why we ask you for your help. We could learn real bear skills and could show sunbear rehabilitation groups in Borneo that we have what it takes to be transported back to our homeland.
Alternatively, if that fails, and our natural behavior never grows strong enough at least we will have a nice and healthy home to live our lives out away from harm and neglect.
If you can help us finish our enclosure, we would be eternally grateful for your generosity and we would send you regular updates about the progress. It would be such a great start to our future.
Lots of bear hugs,
Bedhu and Tegan

After receiving this request (and after I stopped crying), I did my due diligence and learned that that is group is truly amazing. I informed them that we will be making a financial contribution that will ensure that Bedhu and Tegan's habitat is complete! They are so grateful and excited to get started! I will share more as the updates come in!
Thank you all for being a part of this important journey! Together are making a difference!
Please continue to share this campaign as we still have several projects in the works!
For the Animals,
Rebecca
