OK, many of you are anxious to help and wants to me to set up a GoFund to help feed the bears, purchase the bears and/or for rescue mission. As I responded to some of your individual comments, it would be a nightmare if things fall apart. Below is Pat Craig's detail explanation. Also, in my earlier update, Scorpion is unwilling to speak to zoo to have bears relocated to Wildlife Sanctuary due to political conditions. Relocation to US sanctuary will be last resort (please read earlier update) If you want to help feed the bears, please go to Scorpion FBP to donate there and stress that the money is to feed bears and other animals in Bandung Zoo. I hope you all understand why I am not setting up an account and I thank all of you for your support. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi Poh Yee, Thank you for the update. However, it’s illegal to purchase endangered species, so there would be no way to raise money for that purpose. It’s fine to raise money to help transport animals, help pay for medical and other associated costs, and just about anything other than for buying endangered species. If the zoo seems like they will be willing to release the bears, and you feel confident in the need to raise funds to help the bears, it’s OK to do so, but not in the name of The Wild Animal Sanctuary. Possibly one of the other organizations would be willing to do so, but it’s against TWAS internal policy to have others setting up fundraisers on our behalf. We, of course, greatly appreciate your and everyone else’s interest in helping raise the necessary funds to finance a rescue like this, but doing so through a Go Fund Me page, and ahead of any official release statement, is not something we would do. I know everyone is anxious to help the bears, and the one thing most people can do is donate toward the cause... yet, doing so early in the stages of this rescue can easily backfire and then end up a terrible situation. Go Fund Me has numerous examples of fundraisers that were initiated early on, only to have the rescue negotiations fail, which left a terrible impression on many of the contributors’ minds. In some cases, a majority of donors became very upset with the people who set up the page, since they had more or less put the cart in front of the horse (so to speak). If the rescue does not take place fairly quickly after people donate – or not at all – it can be relatively disastrous. Go Fund Me will not simply reverse all of the charges that were made, so it creates a major burden whoever set up the account, as they have to spend an inordinate amount of time and money trying to refund each person’s money. Like I said, if Animals Asia or one of the other organizations would like to cosign or own the GFM page, that’s fine, but we could not. We really do appreciate the work and dedication you have put forth to help these bears, and we hope to see progress in getting the zoo to agree to release them. Yet, it needs to happen through the right channels and in the right sequence so the rescue becomes a success. The funding is only part of a much larger equation, so it should be held off for at least a while in my opinion.
