The Big PIcture:
We are headed for a grueling economic downturn, as you all know. This could have a number of outcomes for us.
-The lending system could remain intact, tens of millions of people will be pushed into default, and be ruined for the rest of their lives. This is what happened after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2008 financial crisis.
-A watered down, partial "forgiveness" plan (such as what is being proposed) could be passed by Congress, where the Department of Education will need to be paid to forgive loans, much like what is already happening with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, where less than 1% of the people who deserve loan cancellation will actually get it (and only partial cancellation).
-We convince the President (either this one or the next) to simply cancel all federal loans by executive order, and return bankruptcy protections to those that remain.
The first and second outcomes suck. The THIRD outcome is the only outcome that is meaningful. THIS IS WHY WE HAVE TO PUSH THIS PETITION SO HARD. WE NEED THIS THIRD OUTCOME. THIS NATIONALLY THREATENING LENDING SYSTEM NEEDS TO GO AWAY! Can we ALL- INCLUDING YOU- make a serious effort to get this petition trending today, so that some good momentum could carry into the weekend?
Please, folks. This is your problem. These are YOUR LOANS! Doing nothing is exactly what our opposition wants you to do. Are you going to give them that satisfaction?!
I hope not.
If ever your country actually needed you to act- both for yourself and for generations to follow- now would be that time.
