Puerto Rico, The Rich Port: America’s best kept secret Colony

This year marks the century old anniversary of United States granting citizenship to the people of Puerto Rico. There is an irony to this citizenship status. There is a double standard in this relationship. It is incongruent with what America stands for. It was only over a century ago, that America had overthrown its colonial rulers, before turning around, and subjecting Puerto Rico to the very same colonial treatment that they fought to liberate America from. The Jones Act is a colonial law that exploits Puerto Rico, holding it as a political prisoner, with a captive market for the Mercantile Industry in the Caribbean basin. It’s time that America honors is core fundamentals values as a Nation and give Puerto Rico the opportunity to thrive economically to participate in the free trade economy. United States as a law abiding country should addhere to the 1953 agreement with the United Nations General Assembly, (in where United States requested to remove Puerto Rico from their ‘non-self governing’ countries list), and, starts treating Puerto Rico like the America, who fiercely fought to obtain Puerto Rico for their strategic Rich Port value that it saw on this former territory of Spain.
