How We Can Be STRONGER On The Other Side of COVID-19

This collective experience surrounding the coronavirus pandemic highlights the importance of improving global animal welfare to reduce the risk of spreading future disease.

We now know that the COVID-19 virus originated from a wet market in Wuhan China in some form of infected organism (widely suspected to be bats). Unfortunately, this isn't the first zoonotic disease to emerge from China in recent years that has had catastrophic affects worldwide. I'm sure we can all recall the recent outbreaks of "Swine Flu"(H1N1) and "Avian Flu" (HPAI). However, the coronavirus pandemic has notably been the most devastating to our global economy, workplaces, wellbeing and mental health.

David Quammen, epidemiologist and author of Animal Infections And The Next Human Pandemic, considers it likely the coronavirus first developed in one species where it then mutated and spread to another (an intermediate host) before mutating once again and jumping to humans.

This possibility is amplified in wet markets when animals that would not otherwise have interacted with one another in nature are kept in close proximity and poor conditions. This is the IDEAL ENVIRONMENT for viruses to mutate and spread to intermediate and human hosts.

The dog meat trade is no different. Dog meat is sold in markets after they have been kept in poor conditions and oftentimes in close proximity to other animal species. We have seen viruses surface in birds, pigs, and bats. What's to say that the next zoonotic disease from China won't originate in canine hosts?

We must take responsibility for artificially creating conditions that breed these diseases and consider the potential devastating effects that wet markets and meat trades could have on humanity.

We have an opportunity to investigate and transform these practices and Conscious Compassion is dedicated to doing just that! By bringing awareness to risks and educating those participating in these practices, we can reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases and prevent future pandemics from wrecking havoc on us all.
