Over the past eight years, the Obama administration has enacted policies and made agreements that support conservation including that of elephants and other endangered species. For example, the Paris Climate Accord, and the USFWS decision to enact a nearly total ban on the importation of ivory into the U.S. are landmark decisions that can have a tremendous impact on conservation efforts. Unfortunately, we are now about to enter a new era which threatens to unravel all of the progress made. Although there have been no specific statements regarding conservation directly from President Elect Donald Trump, Mr. Trump has so far shown no interest in, or regard for the environment, and has stated for example, that he believes that Global Warming is "a hoax created by and for the Chinese to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive." Additionally, Donald Trump's sons have proudly posted photos of themselves after killing elephants and other threatened wildlife on their Facebook pages, which doesn't suggest at least from Mr. Trump's offspring that there is concern for the welfare of threatened species. (Some make the self serving argument that fees paid by hunters are actually a good conservation tactic as the funds from these "hunts" are used to improve habitat and patrol for poaching. This has been largely debunked). It is in this context that we call on President Obama to do all that he can before leaving office to ensure that his legacy of conservation will survive any future administrations. We know that President Obama takes this seriously. But with little time left, we need to put pressure on him before he leaves office on January 20, 2017 to try to seal his legacy as a president who cares about the future of our planet. We also freely acknowledge and thank President Barack Obama for what he has accomplished during his eight years as President of The United States in the interest of conservation. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/04/150407-ivory-trade-vermont-usfws-victor-gordon-cities-nra/
